Shipping Samples for Anthrax Testing from Suspect Animals
 
 
For all suspect animal Anthrax case submissions:
Please contact the Animal Health Diagnostic Center (607-253-3900) before shipping any samples from suspect anthrax cases. For reportable diseases in domestic animals, the State Veterinarian's office also needs to be contacted (518-457-3502).
 
 
Packaging and Shipping Guidelines

If the samples are being hand delivered, then they should be triple packaged in leak-proof, unbreakable containers and hand-carried to this laboratory by pre-arrangement through NYS Departments of Agriculture and Markets or Health.

 

For shipment by ground courier, samples must be packaged according to regulations outlined in Title 49 CFR parts 172-178, and more specifically part 173.199 for a suspect pathogen of Risk Group III. The specimen should be triple packaged in leak-proof, unbreakable primary and secondary containers, and placed in sturdy outer packaging. It must be labeled “Diagnostic Specimen.”

 

For shipment by air courier, samples must be packaged according to International Air Transportation Association (IATA) Packaging Instructions 650. The specimen must be triple packaged in appropriate leak-proof, unbreakable primary and secondary containers capable of withstanding internal pressure of 95 kPa. Appropriate absorbent material must be included. The secondary container must be placed inside rigid outer packaging capable of withstanding a 1.2 m drop. An itemized list of contents must be placed just inside the outer packaging. The package must be labeled “Diagnostic Specimen” and bear a UN 3373 diamond label.
