Reserpine LC/MS update |
11/6/2008 |
 |
Drug Testing for Reserpine LC/MS
Because we strive to offer the best service and most accurate testing possible to our veterinary clients, beginning December 1, 2008, Analytical Toxicology will run all equine plasma samples and other samples requesting analysis for reserpine by Reserpine LC/MS. We have previously offered the choice of Reserpine TLC or Reserpine LC/MS for reserpine analysis, but Reserpine LC/MS is able to detect much lower concentrations of reserpine in a sample (detection limit for Reserpine LC/MS of 20 to 50 parts per trillion), is less likely to be influenced by interference from other compounds, and is more commonly requested. Therefore, Reserpine LC/MS is the preferred analysis and the TLC will no longer be performed. |

BVD update for PCR and Serum ACE |
11/6/2008 |
 |
Bovine Virus Diarrhea Virus Update PCR
Effective October 1, 2008, POOLED BVD PCR testing will be performed, if appropriate, on multiple blood samples submitted for detection of BVDV Persistently Infected (PI) animals unless INDIVIDUAL BVD PCR is indicated. Please note that for cattle and alpaca samples, animals under 61 days of age will not be pooled with animals over 61 days of age. For this reason please fill out the ages or date of birth for all animals. EDTA whole blood is required for animals less than 61 days of age for PCR testing. See Appendix I (PDF) of the AHDC’s Test & Fee Schedule for more information.
Serum ACE
The AHDC has experienced false positives on serum ACE tests for BVDV PI detection in animals that are Bos indicus (Zebu) breeds of cattle such as Brahman. If you suspect that an animal has Bos indicus in the lineage please submit either a fresh ear notch skin sample for ACE testing or request an individual or pooled PCR test on the blood sample(s) submitted. |

Accreditation Awarded by the AAVLD |
5/12/2008 |
 |
| We are pleased to announce that the Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) has been awarded full accreditation for five years for testing of all species by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) Accreditation Committee. This accreditation status will be reviewed annually through the end of 2012. It gives assurance to our clients that we adhere to a quality assurance program that provides validity to our laboratory test results and increases the reliability of our testing services. Full accreditation incorporates the guidelines of the World Organization for Animal Health in establishing specific accreditation requirements (Office International des Office International des Epizooties, OIE, 2008). One critical measure for achieving accreditation is the adequacy of facilities. With financial support from the State of New York and Cornell University, a new facility will start construction in June of this year with completion expected in the summer of 2010. The new facility will provide room to decompress currently overcrowded labs as well as space dedicated to development of new test methods and enhanced biosecurity. |

Pooled BVD PCR Testing |
5/12/2008 |
 |
| Pooled BVD PCR Testing Bovine Virus Diarrhea (BVD) PCR testing is available at the AHDC for the testing of blood and milk samples for the presence of the BVD virus. Pooled BVD PCR testing is also available, for which the laboratory creates pools from individual blood samples and tests the pool, rather than testing each sample individually. The cost of determining which animal(s) is positive when a pool tests positive is included in the test fee, currently $36.75. Pooled testing should only be used to test otherwise apparently healthy animals for the detection of Persistently Infected (PI) animals. Clinical suspects should be tested individually. For pooled testing, individual samples must be submitted separately and identified. Ideally we would like samples to be grouped sequentially by age and specimen type on the submission form. Composite samples will be rejected. Request “Pooled BVD PCR” on the submission form. Otherwise, starting September 1st, individual testing will be performed and billed. Pooled BVD PCR testing for CATTLE For cattle under 61 days of age, plasma or serum will not be tested – only EDTA whole blood will be accepted. Ship EDTA whole blood samples overnight – do not freeze. Up to 10 samples of EDTA whole blood will be pooled but only if all animals are under 61 days of age. Another option for BVDV PI testing for cattle under 61 days of age is an ear notch sample for an individual ACE test. For cattle 61 days of age and older, acceptable samples are EDTA whole blood, EDTA plasma, and serum/red top tubes. Up to 10 samples will be pooled but only if all animals are 61 days of age or older. It is possible to pool plasma samples with serum samples in special situations but please group sample types together on the submission form. Pooled BVD PCR testing for ALPACAS Up to 5 samples from animals 61 days of age or older will be pooled. Only 2 samples from animal under 61 days of age will be pooled. Samples from animals in these two different age groups will not be pooled together. For crias under 61 days of age, plasma and serum will not be tested – only EDTA whole blood will be accepted. Ship EDTA whole blood samples overnight – do not freeze. Please note that the AHDC will not pool ear notch samples or samples for Antigen Capture ELISA (ACE) tests. |

NY State Fair BVD Testing Requirements |
5/12/2008 |
 |
For information regarding NY County and State Fair BVD testing requirements, go to the NYS Agriculture and Markets web site: http://www.agmkt.state.ny.us/bvdpi.html Dr. John Huntley, NY State Veterinarian, has asked us to provide individual test result certificates for BVD negative show cattle, when requested. In order to do so, we need to have the submitting veterinarian request individual certificates at the time of sample submission, and provide appropriate and legible permanent animal identification for those animals needing a certificate. Please mark submission forms clearly. If possible, submit testing for animals needing certificates on separate submission forms from animals not needing certificates. BVD test certificates will be returned to the testing veterinarian/practice by the mechanism specified for receiving test result reports. |

Primary Hyperparathyroid Testing |
1/21/2008 |
 |
| Dr. Richard Goldstein's laboratory at Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine performs genetic testing to detect carriers of Primary Hyperparathyroid (PHPT) disease in Keeshonds. Beginning January 2, 2008, we will require payment for PHPT tests at the time of the test request because of the large numbers of these tests being requested by submitters who are not regular users of the AHDC. We will work with regular AHDC submitters to help make this process easier. For further information, please contact Dr. Belinda Thompson (607-253-3908, bt42@cornell.edu). |
